3rd Annual Schools Workshop @ MOUNTSANDEL

Once again the sun gods came to Mountsandel for sixty 8yr olds from St Malachy’s and the Irish Society primary schools with teachers, assistants, Rotarians and members of MDHG who helped with marshalling. The pupils divided into four parties, they hunted, searched for flints, learnt foraging skills and heard the history of their stone age ancestry. The workshops were supported by CCGBC, Museum Service who arranged for the facilitators to come along to teach and guide the activities. The Dept of Tourism and Recreation again lent their much appreciated support. After the activities we were hosted by the Irish Society Primary School. Big thank you to all for another successful event.

SCHOOL BIKES FOR AFRICA - Red Sails Festival

July 23, 2019

The aim of the static bike event was to raise funds  to refurbish bikes to send to Africa.

The event proved very successful -  full of energetic cyclists from CAUSEWAY Cycle Club, and further afield (Newtownards,  Dubai and a few closer to home).  Really well supported  by our Rotary club members who encouraged the cyclists and handed out leaflets and talked to passersby about the scheme.  The public were more than generous.

The funds raised should refurbish at least the 40 bikes currently held in storage for refurbishment.

Well done everyone.

Congrats to Terry who organised and oversaw the whole event.

2019 Technology Tournament

March 12, 2019

The third Technology Tournament held by the Rotary Club of Coleraine was on the 12th March 2019 and again hosted by Loreto College, Coleraine.

It was a great success with 48 students from three local schools taking part. This year’s challenge was to build a model vehicle capable of retrieving a container of hazardous waste from a derailed railway carriage. To make life more difficult there was a bridge in the way!

Students from Loreto College, Coleraine Grammar and the Dominican College competed to win the first prize of £80 per team in each of three categories.  The entries were amazing and showed great creativity, teamwork and technical ability from those involved.

The winners were

Foundation   1st -   Dominican College Team 3 : Charlotte Muldoon, Rachel Getty, Joseph Moo, Jack Douglas.

2nd – Coleraine Grammar Team 2: Luke Noel, Aaron Pritchard, Ceira Kennedy, Natasha Hamilton.

Intermediate 1st –  Coleraine Grammar Team 3: Amy McNeill, Travis Dodds, Leah Currie, Tegan Love.

Advanced     1st –  Coleraine Grammar Team 5, Dillon McLennon,  Mathew Murchison, David Sherard, Stevie Taggart.

The overall winner of the Rotary Technology Shield, presented by Mrs Rosemary Armstrong, was the Dominican College Team 3.

This was a fantastic result as the same team won last year as well!

The Rotary Club of Coleraine intend to run the Tournament again next year with hopefully even more students and schools taking part.

Rotary Youth Leadership Development Competition

The Rotary Club of Coleraine had the honour of organizing the 2018 regional finals.

The event was a great success with candidates from 8 clubs from the region taking part. Local   candidates from  Coleraine, Ballymoney, Ballycastle, Limavady, Ballymena, Londonderry/Derry, Carrickfergus and Letterkenny were interviewed by a panel of three local business, legal and political leaders to find three students to join 21 other winners from the whole of Ireland to go on an all expenses trip to Strasbourg.

The Judges: Roddy Armstrong, Maura Hickey and Stephen Scott selected Anitta Sibin (Derry/Londonderry), Rhiannon McAndle (Ballymena) and our very own Shreya Ghaie (Coleraine) to represent the region. In February 2019 the girls will travel to Stormont, Dublin and on to Strasbourg.

We are delighted that Shreya has won and she has agreed to come give us a talk about her experience on her return.

Discover  Mountsandel

Another successful fun Mountsandel Schools Workshop day - pupils from The Irish Society PS and St Malachy's PS took  part in a morning filled with activities in the Mountsandel Woods learning about the importance and significance of the Mesolithic site and surrounding area along the River Bann.  Ancient times brought to life with hunting, foraging, flint knapping and context of how the first settlers in Ireland lived.

The afternoon was hosted by the Irish Society giving the pupils time for lunch and getting together in a relaxed space. Short talks were given by Liam, President Jim and Deputy Mayor Trevor Clarke.  Invited guests John Dallat MLA and Councillor William McCandless attended.

Tools for Africa

July 01, 2018

Four Rotarians and two of Jimmy's friends met at Jimmy's sheds at 7pm to build the crates and pack the tools for Africa plus 4 tyres for the vehicle in Tanzania.

The craic was good as the banter between Jimmy and Liam kept us entertained and all was done and dusted in under two hours!

A big thank you to Jimmy for all his work in getting everything sorted for shipping, especially recruiting Liam and Eamon without whom we would have been there a lot longer!.

President's Night

May 25, 2018

President's Night was held at Billy O'Neill's in the form of a BBQ and Fellowship evening.

All of the arrangements were in the hands of Jimmy Dempsey and what a superb job he did. The wine and food were delicious and one group of visitors said it was the best barbecued food ever with the chicken getting a special mention.

The 'craic' was mighty and everyone seemed to have enjoyed themselves in wonderful surroundings, on a beautiful evening.

Our congratulations and thanks go to Chef Jimmy D aided and abetted by Dermot Gordon.

To Loretto for acting as our bar person for the evening in such a friendly and professional manner, hard to believe it was her first time!

Last but by no means least we are indebted to Billy O'Neill for making his facilities so freely available to us.

2018 Technology Tournament

March 07, 2018

The 2nd Rotary Technology Tournament was held at Loreto College on the 7th March and 10 teams from 3 local schools took part. In teams of four they were challenged to send a capsule into space!

The capsule however was a plastic airflow golf ball and the propulsion by elastic bands.

The Foundation task was to construct a launch mechanism capable of sending the capsule 3 metres in the air and to land as close as possible to the launch site. The Intermediate teams had to add a parachute and the Advance teams had to add a detachable rocket.

The initial part of the day was given over to designing the project and the teams were marked not only on their designs but on how well they worked as a team. The afternoon was given over to the construction and testing elements.

The independent judges were very impressed by all the teams’ efforts but the winners were

First - Dominican College Team1.  Rachel Getty, Charlotte Muldoon, Jack Douglas and Joseph Mooney

Second - Loreto College  Team 2. Aine Quigley, Allan Chan, Kate McIvor and Ciaran O’Kane.

Third - Coleraine College Team 4. Lewis Tosh, Alex Lamont, Rachel Wright and Adam Gourley.

Loreto College Team1, Dominican College Team 2 and Coleraine College Team 3 were Highly Commended.

The prizes were presented by Rosemary Armstrong of the Rotary club of Coleraine who donated the prizes and the Mayor, Councillor Joan Baird. All the students who took part received a certificate presented by Kathy Mackenzie President of the Rotary Club of Coleraine.

The Rotary Club of Coleraine wishes to thank Mr Michael James, Principal of Loreto College, for hosting the event and for his continued support.
